Frischling's Adventures in the "Homocide" Capital of America!

Another submission from a FishFraud VIP! All gold, but we've highlighted the most ridiculous parts:
While looking through the NPPA listserv I found several extremely exaggerated accounts of him "working" in East Palo Alto where he claims he spent lots of time doing narc raids and car chases in 1996. He also blows the number of homicides way way way out of proportion.

"There are a number of zones in the United States that pack just as much punch as the hot-spot of the week and never get coverage. Look at East Palo Alto, CA, in 1995 it was the homocide capitol of the US with almost 800 "suspicious" DOAs/homocides in this small roughly 2 mile city of 23,500 people, only 40 cops. I was there in 1996 frequently, it was a war zone (been cleaned up, literally by a new Sheriff). New Orleans' underbelly , and of course my home town "combat zone" the projects in Brooklyn."

For the record, East Palo Alto was the murder capital in the U.S. (per capita) in 1992 with 42 homicides. In 1995, they had six murders, not 800. For him to say that it was a war zone in 1996 is pure fiction.

http://articles.sfgate.com/1996-12-24/news/17788372_1_city-s-police-murders-police-officials

Here he talks about being shot at and involved in gun battles in East Palo Alto:

"Not to sound like an ass (which I am sure a number of you think I sound like often), sometimes close & scared is the only way to get the photo. I admit, as I have before, most of my firefight/gun fight photos were taken in NYC, Boston, D.C., Redwood City/East Palo Alto (CA) and other places in the U.S., but gun fight is a gun fight. Most of my gun drawn and aimed photos are on rooftops, in project stairways and backyards, most of the time 18mm-85mm because it is the only way ( I really suggest owning threat level 3 bullet-vest for this). I know it is very different from Nicaragua, but not far off. I know that I have been shot at to many times, and have bee thankul for wearing the Kevlar because I prefer a broken rib to a hole in me"

More talk of "gun play" in East Palo Alto - the HOMOcide capitol

"I have a number of images of gun play upclose & personal, have a few photos of guns being aimed at me, photos of riot situations from inside the riot & so on, I do not need to travel to find the wars, they are here. I spend a lot of time when I can in the inner cities and in heavy drug & homocide areas , from parts of NYC to East Palo Alto (the homocide capitol of the US for 2 years)."

http://groups.google.com/group/bit.listserv.nppa-l/browse_thread/thread/e58f0ddff14081a9/931a0b99d288d5bb?hl=en&lnk=gst&q=steven+frischling+palo+alto#931a0b99d288d5bb

Then he was involved in a high-speed pursuit with the California Highway Patrol that ended in East Palo Alto. A look at 187 articles in the San Francisco Chronicle archive from 1996 yielded NO stories of high-speed chases, especially one involving eight sheriff/police departments chasing a 14-year-old boy through five cities and two counties:

"The California Highway Patrol, Golden Gate Division, is one such department that has lead perps in front of me on purpose durring a bust to make sure I got there face, esspecially is the perp still have the crime evidence in their hands, that way when the images are published the evidence is matter-of-fact. I find the expressions of perps add to the image and make it more dramatic, although sometimes no face is better. One photo where it works was taken in East Palo Alto, CA which had been the murder capital of the US in 92 & 93, the CHP unit I was with was lead on a chase that ended up involving the CHP, San Mateo & Santa Clara county sheriffs and the municipal police from 5 police departments (the chase went through 2 counties and 6 towns/cities). When the car finially slammed to a halt, I mean slammed, the driver drove up to a wall by accident. The photo shows the face of a 14 year old boy trying to hide his gun (later found to have been used in a murder) and conceal about 18 grams of cocaine, he is there looking scared and inncocent with 3 officers with shot guns advancing on him. The boy is guilty obviously, he was charged as an adult for drug trafficing, so in the eyes of the law I did not photograph a minor."

http://groups.google.com/group/bit.listserv.nppa-l/browse_thread/thread/393a55833055927b/ee0cad1b27995132?hl=en&lnk=gst&q=steven+frischling+palo+alto#ee0cad1b27995132

Apparently there were riots in East Palo Alto, although there are no records of any riots there, and a search of the Chronicle archives for 1996 shows NOTHING to support that claim.

"I see Brooklyn a lot (although the IRA bombings in the U.K. were more polite than the riots in East Palo Alto, CA)."

http://groups.google.com/group/bit.listserv.nppa-l/browse_thread/thread/3117b1dee0aaa72c/2eff63043d310151?hl=en&lnk=gst&q=steven+frischling+palo+alto#2eff63043d310151

So Frischling, where can we see your photos of these riots in East Palo Alto and of the boy hiding his gun and cocaine after that epic car chase? While you're searching your archives, can you find the photos of IRA bombings as well?

All these photos certainly sound captivating - why don't you put them on your portfolio?

  1. Of course it's true! I don't understand why anyone would want to see photos of events that never happened before they will agree to believe in them.

  2. I wonder if Frischling's soon-to-be cell mates would be interested to know about how closely he has worked with law enforcement in the past?

Steven, you've always seen yourself as a law enforcement/fire dept./EMS guy... how does it feel to now have a criminal record and to know that soon you'll be an inmate?

How does that feel? So come on here and leave messages berating us some more over grammar Steven.

In a few weeks we'll all be free to eat steak, have sex, walk in the park, etc. whenever we want and you'll be wearing jail blues and asking some guard for permission to take a piss.

  3. Do any of our "three" regular readers have an archive of the old AOL photojournalism discussion boards, circa 1992-1995 probably, on an old hard drive?

There would be some absolutely incredible FishFoto / Steven E. Frischling gems in there if someone has access to an archive.

One particularly genius exchange that I can remember involved a very junior FishFelon calling out one of the most respected photojournalists from Vietnam as a coward. You know, that photojournalist that made the extremely famous photo, one of the two most famous photos of the war. I think there is some sort of Workshop that he started, held in upstate New York every October, oh gee, what's his name again?

Needless to say, Junior FishFelon was shouted down by many very respected members on that board.

I sure hope one of our three readers could pull this out from the archives, it would be amazing reading.

  4. Holy shizzle! He called Eddie Adams a coward? That should have ended his "career" right there.

As for his adventures in East Palo Alto, who the hell was he working for? And why weren't people telling him he was full of shit at the time?

  20. 5:54, being faster at taking a dump on the wire isn't anything to be proud of. Is that how you define beating the AP? It's also not accurate, because A) no one really cares, it's from unranked Tennessee State vs unranked Air Force, and B) those photos were submitted to the AP from the Colorado Springs Gazette photographer, who would outshoot Fielding any day of the week. Nice try, though.

  35. Steven Frischling Private DoucheSeptember 25, 2011 at 11:36 AM

Three days outta bootcamp and I got sent to the Redhook Projects in Brooklyn to do a double-truck for Interior Living Magazine on the CIA's involvement in a possible kitchen counter design incident at the pad of the Notorious B.I.G.
While riding shotgun in a lowrider with 2Pac, I was able to get some amazing wide-angle action pics of 2Pac and Snoop Dogg- arms outstrectched... MAC-10s blazing sideways. It was pretty intense. I think Biggee may even have been hit.
Later that afternoon I boarded a Concorde for HO, with stops in BAG, FUL, OF, SHT. I parachuted out over the Sinai becase of an amazing hummus recipe that a local bedouin guide told be was located on Jebel- Al Douchebag- and I knew I had to have it!
It was my intent to shoot a portrait of Yasser Arafat while under fire in his Ramallah compound while in the Holy Land but had to settle for a training run with Magen David Adom and a tactical insertion into Beirut with Zohan. Let me tell you, Beirut is no Red Hook. These Arab locals with suicide vests, RPG's, and Kalashnikov's have nothing on the projects of New York and Montreal.
Did I mention that I won awards for my wedding photography while in Beirut? Zohan was able to cover me while I handheld my 2000mm F22 Nikkor mirror lens to shoot the ceremony from over 800 metres away at night- just before a tidal wave came in. They had the wedding on top of a huge rock, so all of the participants survived the tidal wave! (I always knew shooting pix of giant rocks would come in handy some day.) I moved those wedding/tidal wave/Zohan shots for almost 20 large....
I am a tank. I am Steven FRISCHLING and my tank is full... like the Preface to my latest book extolls. After winning my civil suit against Braniff for being stupid enough NOT to have a social media coordinator BEFORE the internet was even commercially unveiled(wow are they stupid, if they would have just listened to ME!)- I used my 2.2 million peso payday fr them to start the Steve Frischling Emergency LifeBoat Co., thinking that- if no-one wants to hire me to do photo assignments- then I'll just have to rescue ppl while taking picture of my incredible coolness saving them. Wow. I rock! I wonder why no-one else thinks so? I'm sad now, because everyone sucks except for me. If everyone would stop sucking so much my life would be way better because then you'd be listening to me since OBVIOUSLY I'm smarterer (sic)

    Thanks

@skyvan it's the size of plains they can get in and out of BUR that is the limiting factor how will I know the issue

@woodyp that's not the issue at all. It's that none of the legacies care about the market. It can take widebodies.

Kind of sounds like Dustin Hoffman in "Rainman' in that one. Do they quote him or does he "work" for them? Doesn't work involve getting paid by these same organizations and wouldn't that make them clients he could list on a resumé?

I sure hope you're not photographers and don't intend to be one. If you are, your posts sure don't show what it takes to understand what a good photograph is. No grace, no style, no wit, no nothing. Just profanity. When you look at an outstanding photograph, what do you see? Do you see an attitude that says you're all shitheads? Do you see an attitude that says yo momma is a skank? If that's your language, then I'll bet that's the language of your photographs, and I'll bet you never rise above the level of a poor imitation of the most mediocre of photographers. I'd take the old geezer's advice. He knows of what he speaks.

  106. Instead of taking sound advisement from the string of professionals here, it seems Fielding has made his final career damaging mistake.

If he had removed all association with Frischling, if only he had publicly and professionally explained his situation and quietly drop off the fish radar, he may have salvaged a sliver of character. But it is unfortunate he chose the other route to support Frischling's self destruction and then publicly ask Frischling why he is no longer twitting together.
