Steven Frischling's Lies About 9/11

Lying fool Steven Frischling has been all over Twitter the past few days, posting links to his blurry photos from Sept. 11, 2001. He even claimed he was in NYC on assignment for two agencies on 9/11.

Back in February, we first posted his lies about this tragic day. If you think you can't hate this guy more, check it out:

Shame on you Fish... As a non-USA citizen I am horrified how you have lied and embellished a story for personal glory based on such tragic and horrific events. It's like you are doing a dance on the graves of those who lost and give their lives on that sad day - Shame Shame Shame on you.

  2. Frischling's action reposting those snapshots with the sole intent self publication, taking advantage of a tragic event is beyond shameful, it is unpatriotic and criminal.

Disinformation, embellishment, conflicting accounts, is all disgraceful trait of a someone less than a man of honor and respect.

Frischlings statements of TWA plane accident smacks with the same insulting and untruthful account.

Your action is beyond forgiveness. You are a piece of shit.

  3. I just found this blog a month ago. As a peaceful man, I do not wish you any ill will. But as a decent human being, I find your actions to be reprehensible and wish nothing more than for you to go away. Especially given your mining of this tragedy for your own personal gain.

May God have mercy on your soul.

  4. Soft target publishing those snapshots on twitter. You think it is a good move using 911 as a springboard to 'up your profile' with a group who doesnt know you? Piece of shit.

Fishdick, why not update your sportsshooter gallery, or better still, show us your award winning portfolio, the images of TWA, your hostile Iraqi series....

    Piece of shit.

UPI and Corbis kicked your ass out. Its just a shame your amateur images are archived on their system.

You keep falling back to these poorly executed, out of focus, badly represented images of a profoundly devastating event. Do you have any idea how disgusting and shameful you are?

    Seriously, a piece of shit.

  5. OK... here's another easily verified bit of shit from Frischling...

He said, "I got down into the city in record time hitting downtown Manhattan a little after 10:AM, and finding a parking space littererly on the sidewalk next to city hall a little before noon."

I was working in NY during the attacks as an editor at a major agency. I can tell you for an absolute FACT that there is NO WAY after the second plane hit that ANY civilian vehicles were allowed south of I believe 14th Street. It was difficult even to get down to Ground Zero on foot. Remember all the images of tens of thousands of people WALKING across the Brooklyn Bridge? The subway had stopped running. Buses weren't running. Cabs and cars sure as hell weren't going to get onto or off of Manhattan. And, City Hall, BTW, is just a few blocks from Ground Zero. Almost half way between Ground Zero and the Brooklyn Bridge.

    Pathetic liar. It's just sad.

  6. his facebook account is about to blow up. he's been posting updates non-stop promoting his photos from anything remotely dealing with 9/11. the photos are beyond pathetic and quite frankly I, as a professional would be ashamed to have my name under them. he has also restarted his ever changing story on the circumstances for being there. since he was called out on the 200 mile trip to NYC in one hour he now states he was already in NYC on assignment. I have a ton of shooters who are friends on FB. some of them who were in NYC during that tragic event have posted one or two photos to remember the day. the fish is stumbling all over himself in some kind of demented self promotion trying to make the event about him. it's not criminal but it's certainly in bad taste. I was going to count how many posts he had made (at last count I think he had put up five pathetic galleries) but alas, I think he has blocked me from his page. I hope people see him for what he is. a self promoting GWC with no talent, no ethics and no morals.

He will say he was in the same location as Robert Landsberg and due to his world class snowboarding skills he was able to use his backpack as a board and skate out of harms way. However, all his award winning pictures of the eruption are in his storage shed.

  10. SF claimed he "hit downtown Manhattan a little after 10:AM"

    Today however, he tweets:
"At 10:28am on #911 01 I 'd just entered #NYC, headed to #GroundZero, just in time to see the North Tower fall - yfrog.com/gzz3dhgkj"

If you go to the yfrog image, the exif data is intact, and more importantly, the street signs are clearly legible. Thus we can easily determine generally where the photo was taken from.

The exif data indicates a capture time of "Date Time 2011:09:11 09:47:16", which clearly is off, most likely by 1 hour, putting the capture at 10:47

Google maps street view puts those road signs here:
    http://www.google.com/maps?saddr=I-278+W&hl=en&ll=40.812495,-73.898903&spn=0.000001,0.000635&sll=40.748297,-73.697662&sspn=0.402625,1.300507&geocode=FVv9bgId_DaZ-w&vpsrc=6&mra=mift&t=h&z=21&layer=c&cbll=40.812495,-73.898903&panoid=cJ6Te08nymJxo8PEFO4vmw&cbp=12,241.75,,0,3.24

The exif data shows a focal length of 300mm - thus considerable telephotocompression - the background looks to be a lot closer to the sign than it actually is. The shot is also elevated - thus he's is a considerable distance from the sign itself.

Generally he is somewhere around here (or further) when the image was taken:
    http://www.google.com/maps?q=40.822798,-73.887177&hl=en&ll=40.821084,-73.889151&spn=0.025137,0.081282&sll=40.812478,-73.898978&sspn=0.01257,0.040641&vpsrc=6&t=h&z=14

Per google maps, the drive time (under normal conditions) from there to City Hall is right around 1/2 and hour.

So if he is at that location between 10:28 and 10:47 (since he shot this frame sometime after the north tower fell - now by his own admission)this seems to provide much more support to his initial claim of arriving by 11:59 than it does "hitting downtown Manhattan a little after 10:AM

    ReplyDelete
  11. s/b 1/2 an hour (not 1/2 and hour)

    ReplyDelete
  12. To illustrate the compression issue and how it provides the illusion of being closer than one really is -
This is the address of the building with the stack and water tower:
    http://www.google.com/maps?q=702+East+135th+Street,+New+York,+NY&hl=en&ll=40.803155,-73.918161&spn=0.006286,0.02032&sll=40.802448,-73.913053&sspn=0.000798,0.00254&vpsrc=0&t=h&z=16

That is around 1 MILE from the interstate signs in SF's photo.

  13. Here's another version of Frischling's 9/11 experience, starting at page 21. In this one, he drove across the Brooklyn Bridge, he broke a few toes and received a minor burn on the back of his neck when WTC 7 fell. He took nearly a half gigabyte worth of images and burned them to CD. He couldn't shoot a severed leg he saw because a of sudden huge dust cloud, and the leg was no longer there when the dust cloud cleared. Sorry if it's already been posted:

I believe its time for fishfraud to up the anti and attract high level officials to his lying, embellishment and fraudulent conduct.

Will see if a news station will take this on. If Frischling wants global publicity, lets give it to him.

As I shot this photo I remember looking north and thinking how clear and blue the sky was and how it contrasted the acrid coloured sky and smoke rising from where the Twin Towers has stood moments earlier.

    http://boardingarea.com/blogs/flyingwithfish/files/2011/09/911_x01.jpg

EXIF data says that pic was taken on 9/12.

Of all the images I shot on September 11th 2001, this single image is the one that has been seared into my mind.

    http://boardingarea.com/blogs/flyingwithfish/files/2011/09/911_x03.jpg

The EXIF data says it was taken on 9/12.

Some image are gut wrenching because of the content, others for other reasons … for me … this image depicts that last standing remains of the Twin Towers that I ever saw with my own eyes, where you could still see the standing structure of the building.

    http://boardingarea.com/blogs/flyingwithfish/files/2011/09/911_x04.jpg

EXIF says it was taken on 9/12.
Also, I don't think the twin towers were burning at the base before the collapse. They were burning at the top before the collapse.

People watching the events of September 11th 2001 unfold at home were aware that 7 World Trade Center was going to collapse, however for some in Lower Manhattan, we were unaware the building was going to come down. I shot this image as 7 World Trade Center began to collapse and this lone police officer began running for cover not knowing what was going on around him.

    http://boardingarea.com/blogs/flyingwithfish/files/2011/09/911_x06.jpg

That cop is obviously not running.

What I recall more than anything is the odd silence I heard in my ears seconds before #7 World Trade Center fell roughly 1.5 blocks away from me followed by my instinct to run as fast as I possibly could away from a cloud I saw forming in the sky while photographing police and firefighters running up the street towards me.

...aside from that I try and block it all out, but I can't block out the smell that lingered in my nose for weeks afterwards.

Now I can't stand to look at the photographs I shot on that day. "

  23. I am currently in new york covering the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks and I was showing a friend of mine the latest fishfraud post about frischling's 9/11 tales and he said "hey, I remember that picture" when I showed him the vertical photo of the police truck that is allegedly speeding away from a fast moving dust cloud. my friend, who used to work for the deutsche presse-agentur (dpa) photo agency in frankfurt, germany. he said that he had called him that morning because he was desperate to find a photographer to cover it for them and couldn't reach anyone else. he said that he knew of frischling through his incessant rambling on message boards. he hired frischling to cover the events for them, so I guess the part about a german editor calling him is partly true. yes, a german editor had called but it wasn't anyone he had worked for in the past like frischling claims. he doesn't remember frischling getting into the ground zero area that early but recalls it was in the afternoon, not at 10:30 like frischling claims. since frischling was shooting for them for a couple days I asked him if frischling had mentioned broken toes, burns to the neck or lost camera gear from falling buildings. he said no. so, frischling has said something that is true, well at least one thing. yes, he did get a call and hired from a german editor. the rest still seems to be mostly exaggerated and the pictures are proof of that. it obviously took him hours to get from his location where he took the pictures of the smoke from up near queens so we know that when he says he watched the twin towers fall he was nowhere near them. not to mention, he has never once before said that he watched the two towers fall, so this is newly fabricated story. it is also pretty clear that despite be hired by dpa, frischling thought it was a good idea to give his pathetic photos to corbis, upi and who knows who else.

    ReplyDelete
  24. also, that addition of "working for newsweek" on the comments he left on the aviation week blog is laughable. why would newsweek hire him when there were so many real photographers with actual talent that were already there when the towers fell. what? did they need some pictures that were really bad that showed no emotion or have any real content?

    ReplyDelete
  25. RE:9:37 After going back and reviewing the EXIF,I must correct the capture time date as recorded in the exif - I obviously overlooked the year in the field noted.

The EXIF shows: Date Time Original 2001:09:12 01:13:23

Obviously the image is not taken at 1 am, but it does not look like it would have been taken 9/12. The shadows clearly show that it is in the morning. Something is definitely messed up with the EXIF date.

Either way, it clearly places him a considerable distance from City Hall after the collapse of the North Tower.

I'm simply dumbfounded by his need to embellish the details of this event. Was he in the City on 9/11? It appears that he was, however, not at the time that he has previously stated he was there.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Steven Frischling is a revolting piece of shit. The more tragic the event and the more suffering that happened, the more he needs to embellish and dramatize his involvement for his own personal enjoyment.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Tower #7 did not fall till 5:20:33 pm EDT

    ReplyDelete
  28. The inconsistencies in the EXIF dates are most likely the result of having AM and PM inadvertently reversed the last time Frischling set the time and date of his cameras.

I once photographed a football game with three different cameras, and when I dumped the images into Photomechanic and selected "sort by capture time" option it was as if there had been and change in the space time continuum on the field because there were people celebrating touchdowns well before they had happened.

My "eureka" moment was when I grabbed one of my camera bodies and checked the Date/Time and it was wrong. One of the others had the right time, but the date was wrong due to AM/PM inversion. The third camera had date and time correct. I learned a lesson that day, and I make it a habit now to confirm that my cameras all have the same date and time.

As for the photograph of the firefighter sitting among the rubble, it is reasonably likely that the photograph was actually made on 9/11 and that the EXIF information is incorrect as the result of camera operator error.

However, if the photograph really was made on 9/12 instead of 9/11 then why lie about this? Is the photo less compelling having originated on 9/12 instead of 9/11? My personal opinion on this one is that this photograph works BETTER as a "the day after" shot and that if the story behind the photo is a lie, it is a lie that works AGAINST the emotional impact of the photograph as opposed to enhancing it. Even if this had been made on 9/15 or 9/16 the shot works as an "image of the aftermath."

This would be similar to making a photograph of the game winning touchdown in the final seconds of The Big Game and then lying and telling everyone that it was from a less decisive moment in the game.

  29. Well said Unsolicited Advisor.

I wish Fish would just pause reflect and say ok hands up - this is what really happened. The only issue here is, he has fabricated so many stories, what would be believe.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I don't think we'll ever see Fish do a "come to Jesus" type moment. For that, he'd have to have a sense of shame.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Unsolicited Advisor:

I agree, he probably switched his AM/PM when setting it. You can look at the files from his D1 and realize this is probably right. The photo that he captioned as the cloud of dust taken of the WTC buildings collapsing has a 5:32AM time stamp on 9/12. Take it back 12 hours and it is 5:32pm on 9/11. Or the exact time the WTC 7 collapsed. He is intentionally miscaptioning to make it sound like he was there with WTC 1 and 2 collapsed, when he didn't really get there until a few hours later.

That would also mean his pic of the "burning twin towers" is actually WTC 7 burning and the time stamp on that is 4:41am, rolled back 12 hours, is 4:41pm on 9/11, which would be about right.

He is clearly lying and when you take the common mistake of having the wrong am/pm, it is clear that he was around for WTC 7's collapse, but not the twin towers.

    He is so pathetic.

    ReplyDelete
  32. The sadness of this is compounded by the fact that this is a case where The Truth is MUCH more interesting than The Fiction that was fabricated around it.

Dropping off the kid at day-care, racing to New York city when everyone else is trying to find a way OUT of New York City, listening to the radio reports from Ground Zero while driving well beyond the posted speed limits, and having no idea where you are going to sleep or where or if you will be able to get food and water, and then actually making it to the scene in time to be present for the fall of WTC 7 is an absolutely AMAZING and apparently TRUE story!

Just GETTING there was quite an accomplishment, and being able to do the job after arriving on that scene is no small thing either. This was one of the more difficult news stories imaginable, and under the circumstances he did pretty well.

I do not understand his need to have embellished or revised this one. When I imagine myself dropping off the kid and racing off into the direction of THAT nightmare it is not without a feeling of intense anxiety in addition to the excitement of having a nearly impossible task to accomplish.

    I simply do not understand.

    ReplyDelete
  33. The answer is simple: that story is not as heroic as Frischling's vision of himself. There is no victimization. In his fake account, he is able to drive 200 miles per hour like some superhuman, and miracuously find an impossible parking spot blocks from Ground Zero. Claiming he was there when the first tower fell puts him at the more dramatic moment, and claiming he was injured in the process is part of his attention-seeking insanity.

so to sum up: he lies because he is a nut job.

It was in the days before the war. The bad war. The war that everyone knew about but no one talked about. You didn’t talk about it because you weren’t supposed to talk about it. That’s just the way it was. Except for one. He always talked about it. He knew about the fish, the one in the sea, the big sea, with the big fish. He desired it but couldn’t have it, because of the wounds. The great wounds. The wounds no one talked about, except him. He always talked about the wounds. He talked about the wounds until the room was empty, which only took a few minutes. He looked around. He decided it was time to sit. The great sit. But first came the moving of the chairs.

Nick didn’t like being alone. It was a clean and decently lighted place. He took out a bottle of scotch. “Chikita,” he said. “Do you want a drink?” “Is it from the war?” She asked. “No,” he said. “I took it off some guy taking pictures at Harry’s. He was asleep. I didn’t think he’d miss it.” “He wasn’t asleep.” she said. He didn’t answer. He didn’t have to answer. He knew everything. Even if he knew he didn’t know everything he didn’t care to think about it. It was after the war and nothing meant anything anymore. He sat.
