New York Times Photographer Destroys Frischling's Equipment!

An excellent reader emailed us to point us to the following story from 1996, in which Steven Frischling claims not one but two incidents in which New York Times photographers trashed his equipment!

At certain events, a single news gathering organization will at times request the privilage of having a stand to themselves. At the trip of the Pope the NY Times and A.P. had there own stands. I put a lens down on the stand to change a lens, and the Times photog kicked it off the platform, I was pissed off!

Chances are in DC the stand was Time, NY Times, Wash Post, A.P. Reuter, or Sygma.

The Times'r was a she, and I was very pissed because durring th Glenn Harris Christina Rosado (the teacher who ran off and tried to marry his student) events here in NYC a Times'r said to me, and I quote:

"When she comes out, what are you gong to do?" I said "Stand here and get my photos" He replied, "No, You are going to step aside and let me get my shots! I am from the Times!"

I was using an 18f3.5 to shoot against the car and an 85f1.8 to shoot her coming out, he had an 80-200 and 300 rather than getting up. He then got anf in in the press mess grabbed mty SB-24 and dropped it into a puddle, it was fried!

I like the guys at the Times, they are nice and their office people are great, but they need to learn that news reportage does not revolve around them, in NYC I would say it revolvs around the NY Post or NY Daily News (The picture paper)

After this insult to the New York Times, what do you think the odds are someone from the New York Times contacted him, challenged him on this story and demanded to know exactly who from the New York Times threw his SB-24 (flash) into the puddle? Fairly good odds, judging by his next post:

alt.journalism.photo: Retraction
FishFotoJr Jan 30 1996, 3:00 am

I would like to post a retraction to something I said happened at the Christina Rosado/Glenn Harris press mess, after speaking to someone at the NY Times I found out that the person who said that they were for the NY Times fits no description of anyone, staff, freelance, contract to the NY Times. With so many freelancers and contract news shooters in NYC I assumed that he was who he said he was, I should have verified if he was indeed an NY Times photographer.

I am sorry if this caused problems with anyone from the New York Times. My sincerest apologies for stating something that was not checked out.

or he was who I said he was, or said who I say he said he was. Yeah, you big mean old New York Times bully, you.

  2. As a career paramedic, I want to hear from fire/EMS personnel that have had contact with him. I find it unbelievably insulting when he talks about his "experiences"(lies) at crashes and his times working in the Bronx.

Over the years, I have seen many people similar to Steven Frischling come through this field.

Here is my guess on his EMT/firefighting bullshit. He either did become an EMT/first responder or at least went to school for some minimal training. With this minimal training, he then made himself out to be an expert. He may have even worked on a truck in the Bronx, but it was probably a transport ambulance and not a 911 truck. He may have even been on an emergency or two. He probably became such a know-it-all that he was run out of that line of work.

Steven, do the real emergency personnel a favor and throw out your stethoscope and trauma shears you claim to have and stay as far from the sick and injured as possible.

One more thing, please take a spelling and grammar course.

  3. Yes, New York Times photographers are known to be the most ruthless photog's out there. They have so little respect for the profession, it is amazing they are said to be "among the best" in the field.

Watch your back out there with them. Or more importantly, your equipment.

  4. "I am barred from shooting at a local high school ( my old high school) because I was shooting a soccer game in which two players collided in mid-air. One player came down striking the other player in the head with her teeth, her front 3 top teeth were ripped out, one imbedded in the other player. The other player had their skull cracked. The injury
was so bad they they landed a medi-vac on the soccer field. The Vice Principal (who did not like me as a student) informed me that I had to
leave the field , he was informed by EMS that I had a polce ID, he did not so could stay on the field & he had to leave. As I was leaving I
was informed that if I ran any of these photos I would be barred from any school functions (no skin off my teeth, no pun intended, it is not
my real paying job anyway, I just help out at the local paper). One photo ran in the local weekly on page 1 & 3 (photo was 40% of the
cover above & below the fold), one shot of the chopper, the cover and the other of the collision where you can clearly see the blood comming up from the head and one tooth being yanked out onpage 3. About 3 days later I recieved a formal letter stating that because of my actions I was no longer welcome at this high school and that if I set foot on the campus I will be arrested for trespassing (on the property of a school I pay taxes for mind you).
The parents obtained copies from the local paper to later sue the other girl for assault, they lost that law suit. The parents seemed to have
no problems, some local people at the game told me I was there to cover the game, not the incident and etc etc, but over all it eas the school that was fickle. They no longer get their football, basketball & state & region ranked wrestling teams covered. They made the county championships last season, 7 photos of that game ran, an over all of their team and 6 nicely framed photos of the other team. They did not want the photo coverage, so it was not provided. "

of a snowboard. My first board had a convex bottom and a "V" cut in the tail. I started racing , and stopped racing (do to an injury in a Super G race) before most still new what a snowboard was. I found my way through photography mostly through skateboarding and snowboarding at the start, and my injury let me explore the wonders that were about to
unfold before my lens for the past 6-7 years."

  8. Valley Stream High School v. Steven Frischling:

"When I did some freelance work for a local weekly in NY, for the twon I grew up in, while my "income" was from much larger freelance work , like the A.P. where I could shoot and disapear into the crowd and never see anyone. At times at The Valley Stream Herald my Mom would at times get phone calls at her house asking "Why did your son photograph this?" The strangest situation was I photographed a medi-vac of a high school student, from my former high school, where a student was hit by a car on halloween and was in critical condition......the principal, my former principal, called my Mom in a rage that I was there shooting and did my
Mom know what was going on and blah..blah..blah. My Mother calmly explained that I lived in Boston and was simply back in NY for a few days, I made my living as a newsphotographer and that she felt the principal was out of line calling her, because she was no longer my "keeper" ."

  19. Just a comment on his technique - getting in someone's face with an 18mm lens is generally frowned upon, at least nowadays, in New York. I understand LA paps are more anything goes, but photographers in the City are gentlemen (and women). We stand back, shoot with longer lenses, and everyone gets the shot. All it takes is one asshole with a fisheye (pun not intended) to create a melee.

It's also not a matter of checking portfolios - look at what he's getting away with in the travel industry - he doesn't need photos, he can make up all the crap he wants to until industry experts begin to catch up with him and start the same thing that's going on here. His elbows should be in closer to his body for greater stability. He has the left hand UNDER the lens as is proper. The camera on our right, his left is on wrong and the lens would be facing out for quicker switching.

    ReplyDelete
  42. 8:39 8:55. There are techniques for holding cameras with greater stability, but I wouldn't judge a photographer solely by the way they hold the camera (or how it's placed by our sides). I'm often caught holding the camera completely "wrong," or look pretty dumb while doing it. If I'm standing looking in a mirror doing nothing else, then, yeah, perhaps I should be holding the camera more "correctly." Elbows tucked in, one hand cradling the lens, feet shoulder width apart, etc., but that's often not the case, I might be dodging flying bullets and falling debris, avoiding basketball players kicking me, ducking my head beneath metal projectiles hurled from angry New York Times photographers, etc. while trying to get my shot. Also, your way to grab the camera from you side, might be different than mine.

When Steven Frischling claims over the years that he has fire, medical and rescue training, it is all a bunch of bullshit. It takes years and years to get trained up to high levels and then you need legit heavy call volume to become proficient.

On his own website (do NOT give his a hit), he says his heroes are medics and firefighters. If that is the case Steven Frischling, stop trying to pretend you are one of us. Let us do our job. Steven Frischling please go hide in a cave and NEVER talk about your "medical/firefighting/rescue training" EVER again. It is insulting.

Please allow me to interpret Steven Frischlng's bullshit:

"Long Island Regional Rescue, Car 2 Queens
Emergency Medical Urban Search & Rescue Team
    Tactical Unit
    VOLUNTEER Firefighter/CMFR-D/Extrication Tech/Deepwater-Ocean
    Search-Rescue-Recovery/Deepwater-Ocean B.C.L.S. "

Long Island Regional Rescue, Car 2 Queens
Emergency Medical Urban Search & Rescue Team
Tactical Unit: He probably joined and never did any training if they even exist.

VOLUNTEER Firefighter: May have joined a VFD and never completed all the training and requirements. Now an expert.

CMFR-D is glorified first aid training with auto defibrillator=> not even an EMT, let alone a paramedic. It means that if he was actually certified, that he could put on a bandage and use an auto defibrillator. Hell, he probably shocked himself once (tongue in cheek).

Extrication Tech: Someone may have taught him how to cut a car open once. The more likely scenario is he watched it get done, then read about it online and became an "expert".

    Deepwater-Ocean
Search-Rescue-Recovery: This usually means deep water dive recovery/search (vague term). There is no way in hell he is trained in that. It takes years and these guys are legit and often ex-military for deep water ops. Steven Frischling probably went for a boat ride in the ocean and became an expert. Come to think of it, he does live 102 yards from the ocean.

B.C.L.S.(Basic Cardiac Life Support): Fancy name for CPR. Anyone can take the course over a couple of hours. Of course Steven Frischling is an expert.

Let me throw in one more Steven Frischling: STEVEN FRISCHLING

Bristol Hospital wanted to contract out the EMS portion of the hospital, and after my photo essay the photos hung on their walls, and these folks were happier because the area they cover knew who they were now,and when the funding issue came up in a public meeting, my photo essay from The Bristol Press(three segments of 3 photos, and 3 cover shots) were brought up, and they got their funding again."

Hubris (pronounced /ˈhjuːbrɪs/), also hybris, means extreme haughtiness, pride or arrogance. Hubris often indicates being out of touch with reality and overestimating one's own competence or capabilities, especially for people in positions of power.

Hubris appears in the terms "act of hubris," and "hubristic."

    Happy crashing!

  61. ^ 2:39 I don't recall ever seeing them, he was going to post them, was self righteous when confronted about it, then they never appeared - at least that I can recall.

  62. ^2:45 - Frischling originally posted links to images of his fraudulent DHS "Approved" stickers in this SportsShooter.com thread:

    http://www.sportsshooter.com/message_display.html?tid=27674

If you follow the links he provided therein (they're down the page a bit but it's not a bad read as far as getting back in touch with Frischling's sheer stupidity when it comes to the aviation industry, and his blatantly apparent lack of judgment and common sense when it comes to air travel) you get a page with the following message:

    "NEW LABEL BEING DESIGNED."

    Really? Ya think?

How Randy Petersen and the other folks at BoardingArea.com can possibly permit an imbecile like Steven Frischling, who publicly advocates the forging of federal documents in an attempt to circumvent TSA security screening procedures, to continue to be associated with their site is beyond me.

  63. ^ 3:14. Do you recall seeing them? I would give up my D2h straps to see them. By the time I got to that page they were being "redesigned." Well, Fish, I'm still waiting. I just can't wait to use them when flying to my next assignment. You're an expert now right? 3:14, you must be one of the three guys who writes for this blog. Har, har.

Yeah, there's only three of us doing this, right...

  65. While it might be fun to go 8th grade with Google terms, it is better for search results for terms people may actually search to vet Frischling and his reputation in the future to have this page show up for actual search terms: Steven Frischling Airline Blogger, Steven Frischling Aerospace Expert, Steven Frischling travel consultant, Steven Frischling social media, Steven Frischling photojournalist, Steven Frischling, etc, as well.

  66. 3:53: DUDE! You've got to be kidding. He actually did this. He does clarify that the label is intended for non lithium batteries. He does say he thought long and hard about this. Which makes you wonder what long and hard thinking means to Steven Frishcling (I can see a little blank balloon above his head). Yes, I owe you some D2h straps. Let me look around for them, I know I put them here somewhere...but, yeah man, you can have em. That is Gold.

  67. ^3:27 - And 3:53 isn't me ( 3:14 ). Well found, 3:53.

Those things always reminded me of the fake ID's you'd try to make when you were 15 or 16 and couldn't believe it when people started laughing at you when you tried to buy beer with one.

The thing that really galled me about Frischling's fake TSA battery stickers was that it took him out of the realm of just being a dumb-shit laughingstock (I'm both a professional photographer and I fly a lot for work, so I've been splattered by Frischling's internet diarrhea of the mouth from multiple angles for years and years) to advocating something truly dangerous. For reasons that have never been wholly apparent to me, there are people who actually take Frischling seriously and listen to what he says. That's pretty harmless if you're looking for advice in the Canon vs. Nikon debate or what the best seat on an Air Azerbaijan 747 (yes, Fish, I know, there's no such thing) is, but here he was actually advocating that the True Believers, idiots though they may be, do something that's probably illegal and would certainly earn one more than an "enhanced pat-down" from the TSA.

As for me being "one of the three," seeing as how I've only made 3 comments (well, now 4) since I found this blog, the other two must be seriously overworked...

If Frischling thinks there are only 3 people behind all of these comments, he's more delusional than I ever thought. And that's saying something.

  68. Well, we're really sitting here in an office together concocting all these stories, we're just pretending to write to each other. It's a riot.

  70. His content on boardingarea is really going downhill. In on of his latest posts, he discovers that politics between Israel and its neighbors just might be a little complicated. He thinks Egypt Air's omission of a destination of one of its subsidiaries on its route map is a major political incident. Read what the foreign policy expert has to say:

    Busy day.

Does tweeting a lot make you a social media strategist?

I have googled, binged and yahooed every possible variation of TWA flight 800 morgue as well as East Moriches Coast Guard TWA morgue and have come up with nothing other then a reporter who won a Pulitzer Prize for his story about the morgue following the crash of TWA 800. I looked on the AP wire, AFP and UPI - not a single pool picture of body bags stacked or anything from inside or outside a morgue on the night the plane crashed. The photos that Frischling describes would have ran EVERYWHERE and would still have a presence on the web. Weeping Coasties and body bags? Hell, a picture like that might have even been a contender for the Pulitzer. I think the real story is that he shot the outside of this building using direct flash and that was about it. Like I said, if he had been the pool photographer, all of those pictures would have been shared with all of the wire services and he wouldn't have made a dime on resales because the market would have been saturated with those photos since they would have been distributed by multiple outlets.
